Empowering Tongan Language & Culture Learning for All
TLC offers accessible, flexible, and culturally authentic ways to learn Tongan—wherever you are. Explore the core features that make our program unique and welcoming for learners and community members.
TLC (Tongan Language & Culture) is a language and culture hub dedicated to preserving the Tongan language through accessible education, live classes, and on-demand learning. Our mission is to build community, celebrate heritage, and keep the Tongan language thriving for future generations.
TLC (Tongan Language & Culture) was created with a clear vision: to preserve and promote the Tongan language through accessible education, cultural engagement, and community connection. Our mission is to make Tongan language learning practical, structured, and meaningful for students everywhere—whether they are heritage learners reconnecting with their roots or new learners discovering the language for the first time.
The foundation of our teaching approach is the Modular Syntax Framework (MSF), a unique linguistic model developed by our founder, Teuila Tua’one Aagard, to make Tongan grammar more intuitive and easy to learn. The MSF breaks down the language into clear, modular sentence structures that reflect both traditional Tongan syntax and universal grammar principles. This approach allows students to build real language fluency step by step—understanding not just what to say, but why it’s said that way.
TLC began as a classroom initiative at the University of Utah and has grown into a wider platform for language education, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. Through live online courses, on-demand learning, and a growing digital resource library, we aim to give learners the tools to speak confidently, connect organicly, and carry the language and culture forward.
Our story is not just about teaching a language—it’s about keeping a living heritage alive. Through every word spoken and every story shared, we strengthen the ties between generations and communities across the globe.
You can join a class by registering through our website’s sign-up page. Once registered, you’ll receive instructions and a link to join live online sessions. Classes are open to all learners ages 16 and up, whether you’re a beginner or have previous experience.
You’ll need a reliable internet connection and a device with audio and video capabilities (like a laptop, tablet, or smartphone). Classes are conducted via an online meeting platform, and you’ll receive easy-to-follow setup instructions once enrolled.
TLC offers classes for all levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Placement guidance is available to help you choose the right level. Our curriculum is designed for heritage learners, newcomers, and anyone interested in Tongan language and culture.
All enrolled students receive a secure login to our online portal, where you can access class recordings, download lesson materials, and review resources anytime. Recordings are typically available within 24 hours after each session.
We welcome everyone! Join our community events, cultural workshops, or volunteer as a language partner or event facilitator. Check our website calendar and social media for upcoming opportunities to connect and contribute.
